another story to tell

A movie about the life of Hypatia, the 4th century Egyptian mathemetician-philosopher and astronomer, is being made by Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar, with Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) in the starring role. Hypatia tried in vain to save the ancient library at Alexandria from being burned during a purge. She was martyred for her trouble, killed by an angry Christian mob. Read more at: Women of History
I remember watching the Cosmos episode where Carl Sagan tells the story about the loss of the library and its irreplaceable contents as he describes Hypatia's efforts to protect the books.
